STATEMENT:
When growing a mycelial fungus under continuous culture conditions the stirrer usually consists of blades which prevent large mycelial pellets from forming.
QUESTION:
Why might this be important?
ANSWER:
If large, compact mycelial pellets were allowed to form, it would prove difficult for nutrients and oxygen to reach all the hyphae and for metabolic by-products (which might inhibit growth) to diffuse away from the hyphae.
